Jun 12, 2010 - Team 4 Loads Paper

Newspaper Team 4 added its pittance to this year's only load of paper. Since we've sold no paper since last year in September, it appears reasonable that we will not sell paper after this load before possibly April, 2011, unless something miraculous happens.

Jun 3, 2010 - Board of Directors Meeting

The Board of Directors met at lunch time last Thursday and was confronted with the loss of two of its members - Lee Benner, treasurer, by resignation, and Jama Carper, director, by change of residence. To replace Lee Benner the board elected William Johnson to serve as treasurer in addition to his secretary job, a common occurrence in Kiwanis clubs. The board granted Jama and Herb Stackhouse leaves of absence and deferred action on replacing Jama as director.

Visitors at the meeting were Louise and Ross Maynard and Lt Governor Bob Simmons. Louise urged attendance at a prayer meeting on behalf of Denni Moss at the Episcopal Church at 1:00 p.m.

The board authorized donation of $600 in support of the Chamber of Commerce's fireworks display in July as budgeted but will attempt to get donations in memory of Chris Hughes to defray some of our costs. The board also approved awarding the third $1000 scholarship as budgeted.

In considering unfinished business, the board approved formation of a club satellite at Lake Oconee as a means of increasing our membership. The board also approved a membership drive involving the sending of pairs of members to recruit new members.

Jun 1, 2010 - Memorial Day

Retired Chief Petty Officer Ross Maynard brought to the Kiwanis Club at its meeting June 1 a program about Memorial Day, its history and his experiences with it and with military funerals. Also at the meeting were Elizabeth M. Keen, recipient of one of the club's $1000 scholarships,  and her mother, Mrs. John Keen. Shown with Ross and with Elizabeth is Sherry Hudson, club president.

May 25, 2010 Kiwanis One Day Project

The secretary of the Kiwanis Club, William T. Johnson,  told the club at its meeting May 25 of his experience with one of the club's projects last month. He told them that Kiwanis One Day is a world-wide project of Kiwanis International in which all clubs are expected to select and carry out some local project on the same day, April 10. He told how the club had been asked by Marcia Campbell to help with the Garden Design project at the Robert Toombs House in the absence of state funds, had contributed $25, and had thereby learned a good site for its Kiwanis One Day project. Johnson explained how club president Sherry Hudson had asked Ed Geddings to be in charge of the project and that Ed had obtained county help in digging up the hard ground of the three planting beds involved in the project. He told how the project came off on April 10th, with nine Kiwanians showing up to prepare the three planting beds with brown paper, mulch, and bricks, as well as to service the front walk with pruning and fertilizer.
