The IRS recently announced small tax-exempt organizations may be able to shift to the filing of the simpler Form 990-N (e-Postcard) rather than the Form 990-EZ or the standard Form 990 for their 2010 annual information reporting.
According to Revenue Procedure 2011-15, for tax years beginning on or after January 1, 2010, most tax-exempt organizations with annual gross receipts not normally more than $50,000 can file the e-Postcard. In previous years, this threshold was set at $25,000.
An organization’s annual gross receipts are normally not more than $50,000 if the organization meets the following conditions:
- Gross receipts, including amounts pledged by donors, are $75,000 or less during its first tax year.
- Average annual gross receipts for its first two tax years are $60,000 or less.
- Average annual gross receipts for the immediately preceding three tax years, including the tax year for which the return is filed, are $50,000 or less.
For tax years ending on or after December 31, 2010, tax-exempt organizations with gross receipts of $200,000 or more or with total assets of $500,000 or more must file Form 990. Tax-exempt organizations with gross receipts less than $200,000 or total assets less than $500,000 are eligible to file the shorter Form 990-EZ. Organizations excluded from the IRS annual filing requirements for tax-exempt organizations include certain church-affiliated groups and governmental organizations.

JANUARY 24, 2011We had a long vacation which included a New Year’s Holiday, MLK Day and a Snow Day, but we were back at our stations, forks at the ready! Phyllis Giddens commented that she had really missed everyone. Everyone applauded for our good turnout.
The Reverend Doctor Dan McCall gave us a nice blessing – he certainly has a way with the Good Word. Joe Willis took home the attendance prize and said that he needed a bottle opener too. Guests included Peggy Seigler, Robert Kirby, Courtney Neibel, Ann Ewell, Sarah Wacker, Charles McDiarmid, and Perry Smith’s anonymous guest.
Our Lt. Governor from Division 6, Walker Davis, thanked our Club for the work we are doing and encouraged us to visit other clubs in our division. Our membership is one-half of the total membership of Division 6.

Part of that goes to the charities we selected and over $11,000 goes to our scholarships. Cobbs recognized his committee of Becky Skinner and Greg DeSandy.___________________________
John Bell introduced our speaker, Deke Copenhaver, Mayor and Kiwanis member. He didn’t really need an introduction so John told us something we did not know – the names of the Mayor’s dogs which are Surrey and Gracie Lynn. It is notable, however, that Hizzoner has been named one of the 100 Most Influential Georgians by Georgia Trend Magazine for four years.
The Mayor had a 1968 newspaper with him which mentioned, in addition to “Ike backs Nixon” that Augusta needed a convention center so we have been discussing downtown and the river front for years. We have not taken advantage of our position on the Savannah and we need businesses there that will increase our tax base. He spoke about his dreams for Augusta; things that are doable because we have all the assets to be a mid-size city of excellence.
We need to work together locally and regionally and support our visionary leadership. We should embrace new ideas and not become what he called CAVE people – citizens against virtually everything.

Perry Smith inducted Wyatt Theus. Wyatt, a Clemson graduate, retired from forty years with Union Carbide. He and his wife have two grown children and four grandchildren.
Kevin Mack inducted Cheryl Wirt. She is CFO of the Family Y and has one daughter.
Lowell Dorn inducted Saundra Plunkett. She works for Univar USA and volunteers for several causes including the Arts Council.

  GARTH SNOW/STAFF Walker Davis (left) of Warrenton introduces Patrick Tritt, governor of the Kiwanis International Georgia District, to the Division 6 Rally at Macedonia United Methodist Church. Mr. Davis is the lieutenant governor of Division 6. "Your service matters," he said. "Service is the backbone of the Kiwanis experience." He called each member to accept more responsibility. "It is sensible to take turns in doing demanding jobs," he said. Mr. Tritt, an Athens, Ga., travel agency manager, outlined Kiwanis' service but also called on club members to tend to their own organization. "We have stressed through the years that we must grow our clubs and our membership to continue to offer that service," he said. He urged members to help expand the club. "Don't assume everyone else will invite members. It is your responsibility," he said. "We may never know when or how our Kiwanis moment affected another life." The Thomson delegation of nine was headed by President Jay Poston, who presented Mr. Tritt and wife Eunice Tritt with a Shoshi Gashira camellia plant from R.A. Dudley Nurseries Inc. in Thomson. Warrenton brought a delegation of eight, including Division 6 Lt. Gov. Walker Davis. The Warrenton club gave a basket of gifts and Warrenton brochures to Mrs. Tritt, who is a teacher. The Tritts travel Georgia weekly to attend division meetings. "I've never been to two that have been exactly alike," Mrs. Tritt said. The banquet drew 17 members of the Washington Club, four each from the Louisville and Uptown Augusta clubs and two from the Augusta club. Mr. Tritt presented a Light a Fire pin to Margaret Norris of the Washington club. Her husband, Carlton Norris, who died in October 2009, was a Kiwanis governor. Mr. Poston, representing the Thomson club, said the local chapter is putting more emphasis on membership. "Our talents are so much stronger together," he said. Tony Gazette, representing Warrenton, said, "I guess we may be the smallest club. I know we're the smallest community. But we have to make up for that in other ways." |
